Pete Nelson’s latest creation for comedian Amy Schumer marks a new era in high-end treehouse architecture.

Known as “the tree whisperer” to the stars, Mr Nelson has built elaborate treehouses for celebrities including Shaquille O’Neal and Drew Brees, with projects now commanding up to US$2 million per structure according to realtor.com.

The veteran builder recently completed a custom treehouse for Schumer at her Catskills farm, designed as a special retreat for her 6-year-old son Gene.

The project, which Schumer secured for US$200,000, features a distinctive sloping roof and hobbit-house aesthetic.

These modern treehouses are far from simple wooden platforms, incorporating full utilities and premium amenities.

“Some people ask me, ‘Pete, is this really a treehouse? It looks like a regular house.’ Well, it’s a treehouse in spirit,” Mr Nelson said.

The construction process involves extensive use of sustainable materials, with Mr Nelson emphasising their commitment to environmental responsibility.

“We’re not going into old forests and chopping down trees,” he said.

To construct some of the huge projects there are a host of local building regulations that often present significant challenges.

“Texas is fabulous, California is the worst,” he said.

Despite the luxury market focus, Mr Nelson remains committed to making treehouses accessible to all.

His company offers DIY kits through their website, generating approximately US$1 million in sales this year.

The demand for high-end treehouses continues to grow among wealthy clients seeking exclusive retreats.

“The treehouse is their refuge and place to decompress,” Mr Nelson said.

“The window of kid time is short.

“If you’re going to invest this kind of money, you probably look ahead and think, ‘OK, one day, this is going to become my little studio.’”
