Wouldn’t it be amazing if there was a perfume that smelled unique and one-of-a-kind once you sprayed it on yourself? Well, three of those currently exist, thanks to Glossier. The brand’s original perfume, You, made waves when it was released in 2017 due to the fact that it was light, cheerful, and smelled slightly different on everyone. It helped kickstart the skin scent craze and quickly became one of the most well-known scents of our generation. Now, seven years later, Glossier has dropped two new versions of the scent — Rêve and Doux — crafted with the same ethos and technology.

I have a bit of a perfume obsession. Not only do I have a collection of over 250 fragrances, I also recently planned an entire vacation around perfumery to visit the perfume capital of the world: Grasse, France. Along with learning all about the history of fragrance, it was a goal of mine to spritz […]

These perfumes are meant to enhance your natural scent, helping you to smell like yourself but…better. As a fragrance expert who admittedly never fell in love with the original You, I wondered how the two new iterations would hold up — so, I put them to the test. Over the past two weeks, I’ve worn each fragrance (yes, I even revisited the OG) to compare and fully analyze the skin-enhancers. Through the experiment, I can confirm that Glossier has stepped up its game. These perfumes don’t just enhance skin, they magnify confidence and have helped me put my best foot forward.

The real question now is which You is right for you? Keep reading for a full review of each scent.

Out of the three Glossier scents, Doux is by far my favorite and a clear standout. This wood-centric perfume allows it to make a statement without being overpowering. A single spritz opens with a soft, sweet violet scent before rich and robust palo santo peeks through. As this wears, captivating spices, including frankincense and myrrh, enliven the senses making me feel grounded yet energized. The cozy base, which blends musk and ambrox (a synthetic molecule that’s like an earthier version of amber), lingers for hours, although only those who get close to you can truly catch a whiff.

This is what I imagine the most self-assured person in the room to smell like — at least, that’s what I feel like when I wear it. I typically gravitate towards sweeter, more complex fragrances, yet I found myself reaching for this bolder option before taking the stage to present a major speech. The mix of uplifting and centering aromas put me in the right headspace to nail the presentation.

Who it’s for: Those who want to exude effortless confidence, as well as anyone who is drawn to mellow woody scents.

When I heard Glossier was coming out with a gourmand, I was undoubtedly excited but also a little confused. Skin scents (which Glossier is known for) and gourmands (which smell edible) don’t necessarily go hand in hand — in fact, in the perfume world, they’re polar opposites. However, the brand managed to put its own spin on the category by creating a light yet warm version that will satisfy anyone looking for just a hint of natural sweetness.

While this opens with buttercream, I can’t say that I can smell that unmistakable creamy note. Instead, when I wear it, I immediately get whiffs of plum butter — imagine fresh plum jam — intertwined with toasted almond and powdery violet. Each of these notes has a distinct essence (fruity, nutty, and floral, respectively), and when combined, the resulting scent reminds me of sugar-drenched produce in the summer. The warm, musky base of ambrox allows this perfume to sit on the skin in a way that gives the illusion I naturally smell sweet. Out of the three You scents, Rêve has the most prominent scent trail. From my experience, others are more likely to notice and comment whenever you wear it (rest assured, they’re always complimentary!).

Who it’s for: Those who are looking to expand their fragrance wardrobe with a surprisingly simple gourmand, as well as anyone who wants to feel subtly sexy.

The scent that started it all. The original Glossier You has gained a cult-like status for its chameleon-like ability to smell different on everyone and truly become one with the wearer. Rather than receiving comments like “I love your perfume” or “Your perfume smells great,” whenever I wear this one, I’m told that I, myself, smell incredible — that’s simply the magic of You.

The sheer fragrance is comprised of just four effervescent notes: Pink pepper, fresh iris, ambrox and amberette seeds. On its own, it smells a little spicy, creamy and warm, but when it interacts with the pH of your skin, it can create an array of different aromas. On me, it leans powdery and earthy, bringing the thought of sun-soaked skin to mind. While it will smell unique on each individual, I can guarantee that it will wrap you in warmth and make you feel complete. Yep, there’s something truly magical about You.

Who it’s for: Those who want to smell like an enhanced version of themselves and anyone who wants a thin veil of fragrance.
