San Francisco 49ers at Seattle Seahawks odds, expert picks, how to watch: An NFC West showdown on Thursday Night Football

Thursday’s matchup delivers an enticing NFC West showdown as the Seattle Seahawks host the San Francisco 49ers. Both teams took disappointing defeats in Week 5 and look to bounce back in Week 6. Despite a two-game losing streak, Seattle currently leads the wide-open division by a game over the Niners and Cardinals. The 49ers are favored by close to a field goal on the road, even with an up-and-down start to the season.

Closing games has been an issue for quarterback Brock Purdy and the San Francisco offense. Second in offensive yards per game — but 29th in red zone touchdown percentage — the Niners move the ball effectively without properly finishing drives. Improving health from receiver Deebo Samuel and tight end George Kittle gives Purdy some key targets near the end zone, though Kittle was listed as questionable on Wednesday.

Seattle’s defense shows flaws — ranking 20th in rushing yards allowed per game. Giants rookie Tyrone Tracy Jr. gashed the Seahawks for 129 rushing yards in his debut start during Week 5. Consistency from lead back Jordan Mason complements San Francisco’s strong passing game and could be a major factor for the Niners controlling the clock against Seattle.

Running the ball and protecting quarterback Geno Smith is a focus for the Seahawks offense. Running back Kenneth Walker III was ineffective in the Giants loss, and Smith was sacked seven times. When given time to throw, Seattle’s potent passing game is third in yards per game behind the dangerous receiver trio of DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett and Jaxon Smith-Njigba, posing a threat to San Francisco’s defense.

The Niners are a respectable 10th in yards allowed per game but have allowed big plays in each of their losses.
