Joaquin Phoenix’s homes are as concealed as his private life. The famous actor has opened one of his homes to the public exactly one time: as a filming location for I’m Still Here, the 2010 mockumentary starring Phoenix as a fictionalized version of himself who decides to quit acting to pursue a career as a rapper. The private actor is not on social media and tends to avoid discussing his private life with the press. So where does Joaquin Phoenix live? As he returns to the big screen to reprise his role as the Joker—this time alongside Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn—in the 2019 film’s sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, we took a look at the few facts we do know about the lauded actor’s real estate portfolio.

SoHo Loft

Phoenix and his former brother-in-law, Casey Affleck, co-owned a NYC loft for many years. The duo reportedly bought the residence so that they would have a “crash pad” to stay at in the Big Apple. Spanning about 2,400 square feet, the dwelling featured tall ceilings, exposed brick, and concrete floors, and was located on the seventh floor of an eight-story building. The structure, which was built in 1911, has also been home to R.E.M. singer Michael Stipe, actor Kirsten Dunst, and Gus Van Sant, who directed Phoenix and Affleck in his 1995 film To Die For (the young actors became close after meeting on set), and Phoenix again in Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot in 2018.

Though the date and price that the actors paid for the home are unknown, the two-bedroom and three-bathroom co-op unit features in I’m Still Here, which was directed by Affleck; the scenes were filmed in 2008, so we know that the Oscar winners owned the property for at least that long.

In 2017, Phoenix and Affleck listed the space for about $3.9 million. Around the same time, the Manchester by the Sea star was undergoing a divorce from Phoenix’s sister, Summer, after an 11-year-long marriage. According to a 2019 interview with Vanity Fair, Phoenix was no longer on speaking terms with Affleck when they put the unit up for sale. “I haven’t spoken directly to him or indirectly in a long time. Three or four years,” the Her star said. It wasn’t until 2020 when the abode finally sold for roughly $3.1 million.

Los Angeles Home

The Napoleon actor has maintained the same primary residence since 2006, when he paid about $4.8 million for a home up in the Hollywood Hills. The 1929 abode sits on a roughly 2.9-acre lot, spans a little under 3,800 square feet, and has four bedrooms and five bathrooms. It’s next to impossible to come by photos of the house, described as a “mission-style bungalow” in a 2019 Vanity Fair profile, but Phoenix offered a peek at the property in I’m Still Here. In the movie, the actor is seen looking out at sprawling canyon and city views near a backyard swimming pool and milling around a lushly landscaped backyard with his two dogs; Phoenix reportedly also enjoys growing vegetables on the premises. Glimpses of a brick patio, colorful Spanish tiles, beamed ceilings, and a bedroom with a fireplace and a balcony are also shown in the film.
