Montreal Canadiens forward Patrik Laine left a preseason game against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night with an apparent knee injury.

Early in the first period, Laine was entering the Maple Leafs’ zone when his left knee collided with the knee of Toronto forward Cédric Paré. The blow bent the knee in a direction knees are not supposed to bend.

Laine lay on the ice for a few minutes clutching his left knee and had to be helped off the ice, putting no weight on his left leg.

Laine, acquired from the Columbus Blue Jackets on Aug. 19, has not played a full 82-game season since 2018-19, his third in the NHL. He has battled injuries every year since.
