King Charles and More Stars Pay Tribute to Late Maggie Smith

The stars are paying tribute to Maggie Smith’s legacy after the actress died on Friday, September 27. She was 89.

Smith’s two sons, Toby and Chris, confirmed their mother’s death in a statement to the BBC.

“It is with great sadness we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith,” their statement read. “She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27th September. An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end. She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother.”

They continued, “We would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful staff at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their care and unstinting kindness during her final days. We thank you for all your kind messages and support and ask that you respect our privacy at this time.”

Smith was best known for her roles in the Harry Potter and Downton Abbey franchises. She was also made a Dame Commander in 1990, later receiving a Companion of Honor title from the British royals in 2014.

Smith’s Downton costar Bonneville offered his “condolences to her boys and wider family” in a statement to the BBC.

“Anyone who ever shared a scene with Maggie will attest to her sharp eye, sharp wit and formidable talent,” he added. “She was a true legend of her generation and thankfully will live on in so many magnificent screen performances.”

“Saddened to hear Dame Maggie Smith has passed. I had the unforgettable experience of working with her; sharing a two-shot was like being paired with a lion,” he wrote via X, referring to their experience filming 1993’s Suddenly Last Summer. “She could eat anyone alive, and often did. But funny, and great company. And suffered no fools. We will never see another. God speed, Ms. Smith!”

Morris revealed via her Instagram Story that she always enjoyed Smith’s roles in The Secret Garden, Hook, Sister Act, Harry Potter and Downton Abbey.

“My childhood,” the singer wrote. “Rest easy, Maggie Smith.”

The British broadcaster shared a photo from his 2021 interview with Smith.

Smith’s Sister Act costar gushed about working with the late actress. “Maggie Smith was a great woman and a brilliant actress,” Goldberg wrote via Instagram, sharing a photo of the pair in their nun costumes. “I still can’t believe I was lucky enough to work with the ‘one-of-a-kind’ [star]. My heartfelt condolences go out to the family … RIP.”

“Our dearly loved and revered head of Gryffindor house ❤️ you will be so missed by the Harry Potter community,” Wright, who played Ginny Weasley in the Harry Potter franchise alongside Smith, wrote via Instagram. “My favorite scene with Maggie was when we were all learning to dance for the Yule Ball. She embodied that perfect balance of sass and loving care that McGonagall has. She kept Gryffindors on their toes. My deepest condolences to Maggie’s family at this time.”

Murray, who played Seamus Finnigan in the Harry Potter films, was “saddened” to hear about Smith’s death. “Maggie was the most intimidating person I’ve ever met but once cracked she was the kindest, most caring and loving Lady I’ve ever met,” he wrote via social media. “I’ve so many fond memories with Maggie. From getting drunk while waiting for a Fax in a hotel reception to getting some of the best hugs and cuddles in the world to even Maggie trying to keep a straight face while shooting a scene while a Baboon continuously masturbated as soon as she’d speak 😂. We’ve shared so many great moments together that I will treasure.”

The King of England issued a statement on behalf of himself and his wife, Queen Camilla.

“My wife and I were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Dame Maggie Smith,” Charles wrote in a statement shared via social media. “As the curtain comes down on a national treasure, we join all those around the world in remembering with the fondest admiration and affection her many great performances and her warmth and wit that shone through both on and off the stage.”
