TCU coach Sonny Dykes was ejected from Saturday’s game against SMU after receiving consecutive unsportsmanlike penalties to open the second half.

TCU, trailing 41-21 at halftime, returned the opening kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown, but it was called back for a holding penalty. An irate Dykes ran down the field and was seen on the CW broadcast yelling at a sideline official. Strength coach Kaz Kazadi tried to stay between Dykes and the official.

The Horned Frogs’ next play was a 22-yard gain, but Dykes apparently continued to berate the officials, which resulted in a second unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. By rule, he was ejected from the game. A calmer Dykes kept talking to the officials before eventually leaving the field with Kazadi beside him.

College football added a new rule in 2016 to eject coaches with two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. The first to be ejected was Bowling Green coach Scot Loeffler.

Dykes was SMU’s head coach from 2018 to 2021, posting a 30-18 record and bringing the Mustangs to heights not seen since the 1980s. But he left for cross-town rival TCU, drawing ire from the SMU faithful. Those SMU fans waved goodbye as he left the field on Saturday. The TCU-SMU rivalry is not scheduled to continue past next season, meaning this could be the final time Dykes was on SMU’s field.

TCU still drove the length of the field for a touchdown on the first drive without Dykes.
