7 Small Balcony Tips to Perfect Your Outdoor Design

In recent years, many of us have developed a new appreciation for time spent outdoors, in contact with nature. Even if it’s just a small balcony where you can relax outside during warm weather, outdoor spaces are a coveted amenity in big-city apartments, perhaps with a book in hand or simply enjoying some fresh air and sunlight. They aren’t always easy to find, so if you are lucky enough to have landed an apartment with one, you’ll want to do it up right with inspiration from our tips.

Before diving into different design strategies, there are two common mistakes made with small balconies. Some people tend to go overboard, determined to fit a table, chairs, lounger, and an abundance of plants into a space that’s only 50 or 60 square feet. The other error that many make is to simply leave the balcony completely untouched. The former can end up becoming a cluttered mess while the latter represents a lost opportunity to create a space you can enjoy, especially if you follow our suggestions below.

1. Look up!

If you only have a limited area to work with, the answer is often to think upwards. Typical planters that sit on the balcony itself can take up valuable space while shelves for plants will allow you to pack in more green as you create an improvised vertical garden. It’s an easy way to efficiently use the space you have to create the most lush and verdant environment possible.

Even if your balcony isn’t as big or beautiful as those in the New Orleans French Quarter, you can still take inspiration from these picturesque hanging baskets.

2. Know when to fold ‘em

It’s hard to truly enjoy your balcony without somewhere to sit. At the same time, if you want to use the space for other activities, whether some yoga stretches in the morning or hanging your clothes out to dry, then flexible, folding furniture may be the perfect solution. When you’re not entertaining or relaxing on your balcony, the folding pieces can be stowed away in a few simple steps and they take up little space.
