USC has officially retired former quarterback Caleb Williams’ No. 13 jersey, the school announced on Thursday.
A banner with Williams’ No. 13 and 2022 — the year he won the Heisman Trophy — will be placed on the Peristyle end of the LA Coliseum. Though the announcement came on Thursday, the retirement was a formality when Williams won the Heisman in December 2022. USC only retires jersey numbers for Heisman Trophy winners. The Trojans have eight.
Linebacker Mason Cobb, who recorded the game-sealing interception in the Trojans’ dramatic win over LSU on Sunday, currently wears No. 13. He transferred to USC and played for the Trojans in 2023 so he’s likely grandfathered in but once he leaves the program no one else will wear No. 13.
USC also announced that Reggie Bush’s No. 5 jersey is also back among the Heisman numbers in the Coliseum.
Bush won the Heisman Trophy in 2005 and his jersey was placed on the Peristyle shortly afterward. It was removed in 2010 after Bush forfeited his Heisman Trophy because the NCAA deemed he received impermissible benefits. USC was handed heavy NCAA sanctions tied to Bush as a result and the school was forced to disassociate from Bush for a decade.
The disassociation ended in June 2020 and fans and supporters became vocal in demanding that the Heisman Trust return the trophy to Bush. The Heisman Trust returned Bush’s trophy to him in April.
