The Italian coast guard said on September 4 that it rescued seven migrants off the coast of Lampedusa from a drifting vessel that had departed from Libya. The search was continuing for 21 people said to be missing.
According to Italian news reports, the seven had managed to keep hold of the drifting vessel for three days before they were found.
