Rapper Fatman Scoop Dead at 53 After Collapsing in the Middle of Concert

Rapper Fatman Scoop died at the age of 53.

“It is with the heaviest of hearts I announce the passing of Isaac Freeman III, known professionally as Fatman Scoop,” an Instagram statement shared by producer Pure Cold (A.K.A. Birch Michael) on Saturday, August 31, read. “You taught me how to be the man I am today. I love you Scoop. Thank you so much for everything you gave to me.”

In his Instagram caption, Pure Cold further detailed their bond.

“I am honestly lost for words,” he wrote. “You took me all over the world and had me performing alongside you on some of the biggest and greatest stages on this planet, the things you taught me have truely [sic] made me the man I am today.”

A cause of death was not immediately revealed. Hours earlier, Fatman Scoop collapsed in the middle of a Friday, August 30, concert in Connecticut. CPR was performed on stage and he was taken to a hospital.

Fatman Scoop’s family broke their silence on his death later on Saturday, sharing a lengthy statement on the late rapper’s Instagram page.

“It is with profound sadness and very heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of the legendary and iconic Fatman Scoop. Last night, the world lost a radiant soul, a beacon of light on the stage and in life,” the statement read. “Fatman Scoop was not just a world-class performance, he was a father, brother, uncle and a friend. He was the laughter in our lives, a constant source of support, unwavering strength and courage.”

The note continued, “As we mourn the loss of Fatman Scoop, we also celebrate this remarkable life and the countless lives he touched. Fatman Scoop’s legacy is of love and brightness, it will reside in our hearts and memories forever.”

Fatman Scoop was known for his guest spots on hits including “Lose Control” by Missy Elliot and “I Like That” by Mariah Carey.

“Fatman Scoop was known to the world as the undisputed voice of the club,” his family added on Saturday. “His music made us dance and embrace life with positivity. His joy was infectious and the generosity he extended to all will be deeply missed but never forgotten.”

The music community has rallied around Fatman Scoop’s family, sharing their condolences.

“He was one of the most wonderful people I’ve ever met. He truly will be missed,” Crystal Waters wrote via Instagram comment. “Love and prayers out to his family.”

Lil Jon, meanwhile, added, “Rest Well, Brother.”

Fatman Scoop is survived by his two children, whom he shared with a past partner.
