Brighton & Hove Albion are hopeful that a midfield injury crisis will not be made worse by a lengthy absence for James Milner.

A hamstring issue forced the 38-year-old off after 16 minutes during Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Arsenal in the Premier League.

Head coach Fabian Hurzeler said after the match: “We have to do a scan. I think that it’s not so bad.”

Brighton were without three of their summer signings for the match in north London after selling Billy Gilmour to Napoli at the end of the transfer window on Friday night.

Matt Riley faces surgery on Monday on left ankle ligament damage sustained six minutes into his debut against Crawley on Tuesday in the Carabao Cup.

Fellow midfielder Mats Wieffer was ruled out for the second league game running by a recurrence of thigh trouble which sidelined him from the European Championship for the Netherlands this summer.

Turkish full-back Ferdi Kadioglu, who can also play in midfield, missed out on a possible debut against Arsenal after sustaining a minor hamstring problem in training on Friday.

Brighton secured a 1-1 draw after Joao Pedro’s second half equaliser following Kai Havertz’s opener, with Arsenal’s Declan Rice sent off in the 49th minute following a second yellow card.

The result maintains Brighton’s unbeaten start to the season under Hurzeler, with seven points from their opening three matches.
