A running theme with the Trump campaign, since President Joe Biden was forced to withdraw from the presidential race in July, has been to assert that Kamala Harris was selected to replace him via an undemocratic process. The compelling case they’ve made is that the vice president “won” the nomination without having a single primary vote cast for her, much less winning an actual primary.

“This was an overthrow of a president. This was an overthrow,”  GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump stated Saturday during a campaign stop in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. “They deposed a president. It was a coup of a president. This was a coup.”

During his chat with Twitter/X CEO Elon Musk last Monday, Trump said “And say what you want, this was a coup. This was a coup of a President of the United States.”

While Biden himself hasn’t used the actual word, a quick read between the lines would suggest he shares a similar belief, although he wouldn’t dare say so publicly because “unity” and all that.

“A number of my Democratic colleagues in the House and Senate thought that I was going to hurt them in the races. And I was concerned if I stayed in the race, that would be the topic, you’d be interviewing me about why did Nancy Pelosi say – why did – and I thought it’d be a real distraction,” Biden told CBS News in one interview.

On the first day of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Biden is scheduled to give his speech to delegates. Earlier in the day, he did his walkthrough and soundcheck, and during it he was asked about Trump’s “coup” remarks.

Watch as a befuddled Biden gives a nearly unintelligible answer to the reporter:

Some journalists claimed Biden replied something along the lines of Trump’s “stability is in question” but it was hard to make out what he said.

At other points during his time at the DNC, here’s how Biden looked:

Clearly, they want to get Biden’s speech (and that of First Lady Jill Biden) out of the way well ahead of Harris’ acceptance speech Thursday for more reasons than just the obvious ones. But incredibly, according to the official schedule, his will be the last one given on Monday night.

I’m honestly shocked they haven’t pre-recorded it considering what we’ve learned about how Biden and his handlers supposedly feel like he’s at his best between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm, but it purportedly is set to air live, so stay tuned.
