Toronto Blue Jays outfielder George Springer was ejected in Tuesday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels after a video review said he wasn’t hit by a pitch.

With the Blue Jays up 5-0 in the top of the seventh inning, Springer stepped up to the plate. At a 1-2 count, Kenny Rosenberg’s pitch appeared to hit Springer’s right foot, causing the ball to change direction toward the catcher. Springer told the umpire that the ball hit him and motioned to Blue Jays manager John Schneider to challenge the call.

After the review, the umpire said that the call on the field was upheld, meaning it was deemed that Springer wasn’t hit by the pitch and the Blue Jays lost their challenge. Springer yelled “What” from the plate in shock. Schneider lifted his arms in disbelief at the call.

After Springer criticized the decision, Manny Gonzalez, the home plate umpire, ejected him from the game. This led to a heightened argument, with Springer getting in the umpire’s face, voicing his frustration. Schneider came out of the dugout to defend Springer, questioning why the umpire didn’t overturn the call. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. held Springer back, trying to diffuse the situation. As Springer made his way to the dugout, he was visibly angry at Gonzalez for the call.

A slow-motion video on the Blue Jays broadcast appeared to show the ball hitting Springer’s right foot and changing direction. But the call wasn’t overturned after video review at MLB’s replay command center in New York, which led to Springer’s ejection.

Springer went 0-for-2 in Tuesday’s game, tallying one run in the Blue Jays’ 6-1 win over the Angels.
