The Boston Red Sox have suspended All-Star outfielder Jarren Duran two games without pay for directing a homophobic slur toward a fan during the Red Sox’s 10-2 loss to the Houston Astros on Sunday, the team announced Monday.

“In consultation with Major League Baseball, the Red Sox today issues an unpaid two-game suspension to outfielder Jarren Duran beginning with tonight’s game against the Texas Rangers,” the Red Sox said in a statement. Duran, who made the offending comment in the bottom of the sixth inning, appeared to be directing his remarks to a fan sitting behind home plate.

Duran, 27, was the 2024 All-Star Game MVP. He’s batting .291 and leading the league in doubles (36) and triples (13) entering Monday. His 14 home runs and 58 RBIs are both already career highs. Boston selected Duran during the seventh round of the 2018 MLB Draft.
