Virgil van Dijk believes Liverpool must add to their squad before the transfer window closes this month and has faith that signings will be made.
Liverpool are the only Premier League side yet to make a senior signing this summer with new head coach Arne Slot taking his time to assess his new squad.
The Merseyside club have identified a new No 6 as the club’s main priority in the summer transfer window and are continuing to work on a deal for midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad.
However, with an extended Champions League schedule and to be able to compete in every competition, Van Dijk believes that while the current squad is strong, it needs to and will be strengthened.
“I’m positive. I’m confident. I think that we should make some signings based on how long the season will go,” said Van Dijk.
“I think they’re working behind the scenes and I’m fully convinced and trust in the club that they will do the right thing for us and get the best possible squad in order to compete in every competition that we are in. I have to trust and we’ll see what happens.”
The Netherlands international was speaking after Liverpool’s 4-1 victory over Sevilla in Slot’s first game in front of fans at Anfield.
Van Dijk played 75 minutes in his first match action since returning to pre-season training last week. Liverpool’s Premier League campaign begins with a trip to Ipswich Town next weekend.
The centre-back’s own future remains uncertain as he has entered the final year of his current contract.
He confirmed the situation remains unchanged: “There’s no changes at the moment,” he said.
