“Saturday Night Live” doesn’t have the best reputation among Republicans and conservatives, especially anyone who has managed to develop a sense of humor. Often (but not always), the NBC network’s weekend comedy mainstay caters to the “leftist worldview affirmation session” model favored by many progressive comedians nowadays.
The show wasn’t always that way, with some patches of funny business happening on the show sometimes, including during the 2020 election–in particular, the Democrat primary, which then-California Senator Kamala Harris’ campaign was not long for.
I wrote at the time about how Maya Rudolph, the cast member who played Harris during that time, found out about Harris getting picked as Biden’s VP: The look on her face and her genuine reaction were gold (which I wish were available, but the video in the story below has been made private. It is in the clip at the end of the story, though).

The Way This ‘SNL’ Comedian Learned Kamala Harris Was Biden’s VP Pick Is Delightful
Fast-forward to 2024, when there’s a very different political scenario, of course; Harris, after three-and-a-half years as Joe Biden’s vice president, is now suddenly the Democrat nominee for president in place of Biden. And now we know who is going to play the candidate through the election.
It’s just been announced that Rudolph will return as a guest player, since she appears as a regular on another program. Luckily, that other show is produced by a familiar name to SNL viewers of any era–Lorne Michaels–so there would be an issue with her taking time off to help out at 30 Rock.
This has already been a banner year for the comedienne, with Rudolph honored with a bevy of 2024 Emmy nods (four!)
Maya Rudolph landed four Emmy nods this year from three different programs: “Loot,” “Big Mouth” and “Saturday Night Live.”

Unsurprisingly, one of those nominations is for a guest appearance on the comedy show as “Kamala.” But fans will have to wait until at least late September to see her resume the role, since “Saturday Night Live” is on summer hiatus.

Maya Rudolph has been sworn back in to “Saturday Night Live,” where she is expected to play Vice President Kamala Harris through the 2024 presidential election.
Season 50 of “SNL” will premiere on Sept. 28. While Rudolph was preparing to shoot Season 3 of her Apple TV+ comedy series “Loot,” sources indicate that the production has been pushed back to allow Rudolph to return to 30 Rock’s Studio 8H. (Both “Loot” and “SNL” are produced by Universal Television and Lorne Michaels’ Broadway Video.)
So far, neither Rudolph nor SNL has commented on the story yet. I bet it’s going to be just as entertaining as the first time.
