The real drama in the women’s soccer event at these Games has come from USA’s neighbours, Canada.

They were given a six-point deduction earlier in the competition having been caught spying on their opponents using a drone. The spying first came to light July 22, when New Zealand team staff members noticed a drone flying above their practice in Saint-Etienne, and notified police. Law enforcement tracked the drone back to its operator, Joseph Lombardi, an analyst with the Canadian women’s team, the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) said. The COC later confirmed a separate drone incident at New Zealand training on July 19.

Canada appealed against that decision, but that appeal was rejected and the punishment has been upheld.
