The NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers bolstered their starting rotation on Monday night by dealing with a division rival, acquiring righthander Frankie Montas from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for young outfielder Joey Wiemer and veteran righty Jakob Junis, league sources confirmed to The Athletic.
Montas ranked No. 34 on The Athletic’s Trade Deadline Big Board, and the No. 12 ranked starting pitcher.
Montas posted a 5.01 ERA over 93 1/3 innings in 19 starts for the Reds, with his ERA rising by nearly a run after a difficult July. But he should provide innings for a rotation that has been plagued by injury. He’s owed $6.7 million for the rest of the season, with a mutual option for 2025.
