Utah State cornerback Andre Seldon Jr. died Saturday in an apparent cliff-diving accident at a nearby reservoir, the school said. He was 22 years old.
The Cache County (Utah) Sheriff’s Office began a search Saturday after receiving reports that a young man was diving from cliffs at Porcupine Reservoir and did not resurface.
Utah State officials learned Saturday night that he was found at 9:05 p.m. MT by the Utah Department of Public Safety dive team, USU said in a statement.
“Our initial investigation leads us to believe this is a tragic accident as multiple witnesses recount the same information,” the Cache County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

A Belleville, Mich., native, Seldon joined the Utah State team this summer and was scheduled to begin classes this fall. He spent the spring at TCU, the 2022 and 2023 seasons at New Mexico State and the previous two seasons at Michigan. He started 12 games at NMSU in 2022 and played in all 15 games last season as the Aggies played for the Conference USA championship.
“Our football program is heartbroken to have to endure the loss of one of our own,” Utah State interim head coach Nate Dreiling said in a release. “Having had a previous relationship with Andre during our time together at New Mexico State, I can tell you he was an incredible person and teammate. Our condolences and prayers go out to Andre’s family as we grieve with them over this tremendous loss.”
Seldon recorded 53 tackles and an interception for NMSU last season. He was expected to be heavily involved at Utah State this season.
