Daniel Brown spoke after finishing the first round as the tournament’s leader: “It’s a great feeling. I couldn’t have written it up, to be honest. At the same time there’s a long way to go, so trying to stay calm and collected.

“It does (feel like a dream) in a way but I came into this, my first major, very much taking it seriously, knowing I can do well on links golf or any golf course. I know that if I play well I can compete with most, so hopefully it carries on throughout the week.

“On my first tee shot I was struggling to feel my legs a bit. But after that I got quite settled.

“Drove it really well today. I think I only missed two fairways.”

“On whether he was looking at the leaderboard: “Yeah I was. It’s hard to not look. I was looking but it didn’t affect me too much.”
