Jonny Evans has signed a new one-year contract with Manchester United.

The 36-year-old’s existing deal expired at the end of June but he has now committed to fresh terms until 2025.

Evans re-joined United last summer, initially on a short-term deal for pre-season, having been training with the club’s under-21 squad after his contract with relegated Leicester City expired, before signing a one-year deal in September.

He featured 30 times in all competitions last season, including an appearance from the bench in the FA Cup final victory over Manchester City, as United contended with a number of defensive injury problems.

“I am delighted to have extended my contract at Manchester United for another season,” Evans said.

“To play for this great club and feel the support from our incredible fans is always a privilege.

“Returning to the club last season was an honour; representing the team on the pitch alongside fantastic team-mates under an excellent manager.

“Winning the FA Cup together was an unforgettable experience; I know we can challenge for more trophies in the season ahead.”

Evans, a product of the United academy, spent nine years in the United first team before departing the club for West Bromwich Albion in 2015.

United have moved to strengthen at centre-back this summer, holding talks with Bayern Munich over Matthijs de Ligt and having two offers rejected by Everton for Jarrad Branthwaite.

Raphael Varane left the club at the end of last season as his contract expired while Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof are other options for United in the position.
