Leeds United have signed goalkeeper Alex Cairns from League Two side Salford City for an undisclosed fee.

Cairns, 31, has signed a two-year contract at Elland Road.

He is expected to be a replacement as third choice goalkeeper following the departure of Kris Klaesson earlier in the week.

The Norwegian ‘keeper signed for Polish Ekstraklasa side Rakow Czestochowa, ending a three-year spell at Leeds.

Cairns returns to Leeds for a second spell in his career, having started out in the club’s Thorp Arch academy.

He made one senior appearance in 2011 before leaving for Chesterfield in 2015. He moved to Fleetwood Town in 2016 before joining Salford last summer.

Cairns played in every league game for Salford last season and played against Leeds when the League Two club won a penalty shoot-out against Daniel Farke’s side in the League Cup.

He is the second arrival of the window for Leeds after they sealed a £10million deal to bring defender Joe Rodon back to the club on a permanent basis after his successful loan from Spurs in 2023-24.

Leeds earlier announced the departure of academy product Charlie Cresswell, who has joined Ligue 1 side Toulouse on a permanent transfer.
