Emma Raducanu insists that she has no regrets about withdrawing from the mixed doubles event with Andy Murray, explaining that she had to “prioritise” her body.
Raducanu pulled out of the match with stiffness in her wrist four hours before it was due to begin, which effectively ended Murray’s Wimbledon career.
On Sunday, Raducanu lost to qualifier Lulu Sun in the singles event 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 and after the match, she was asked about the previous day’s decision.
“It was a very difficult decision,” Raducanu said after he defeat on Sunday. “Of course, I didn’t want to take his last match away from him. But at the end of the day I think a lot of the players in a similar situation would have done the same thing, prioritising their body.
“I still stand by making the right call.”
When pressed on the reaction to the decision, Raducanu emphasised that she wouldn’t change anything about her choice.
“I don’t think I would have done it any other way. I think in this sport especially, as an individual, you have to make your own calls and prioritize yourself.
At the time of her withdrawal, Raducanu said that Murray was “obviously disappointed” with the news but added that she thought he could play in the Paris Olympics to have his final farewell.
Later that day, Murray’s mother, Judy, referred to the situation as “astonishing” in a post on X.
She later locked her X account, before issuing a second comment the following morning, saying “not sure anyone understands sarcasm these days.”
When asked about Judy Murray’s online reaction, Raducanu said she had not seen the posts and added “I’m sure she didn’t mean it” when asked about her ‘astonishing’ comment.
