Euro 2024 quarterfinal, champion odds: England still favored after narrow escape

England continues to be unimpressive at Euro 2024, but remains alive and perched atop the championship odds ahead of the quarterfinals.

After the first knockout round on Tuesday, the Three Lions are +350 to win the tournament on BetMGM. England was +350 following the group stage, meaning the team’s odds haven’t gotten shorter despite advancing. Even though the English have just three matches left to win, another uninspiring performance against Slovakia on Sunday has eroded some confidence in the team.

As was true before the Round of 16, England’s path to get to the final remains easier on paper than the challenges on the other half of the draw. Powerhouses Spain and Germany will meet in one quarterfinal, and France and Portugal will meet in another. The winner of those will play in a semifinal. That’s four of the top six pre-tournament favorites.

Meanwhile, England faces Switzerland, which pulled off an upset in the Round of 16 against Italy. The Swiss were dominant against the defending champions and could pose the toughest test the English have faced so far. After all, England needed a miraculous 95th-minute goal from Jude Bellingham to stay alive against Slovakia and has been tied after 90 minutes in three of its four matches.

Netherlands was impressive in a win against group-winning Romania and now faces upstart Turkey in the other quarterfinal.

England is just ahead of Spain (+400), France (+450) and Germany (+450) in the odds. With Spain and Germany facing off in a quarterfinal, it’s possible the winner will surpass England as the favorite after clearing that difficult hurdle. Both teams won by multiple goals in the Round of 16 and were among the most impressive teams in the group stage.

Of the four quarterfinals, only the Netherlands is a minus-odds favorite to win in 90 minutes, which means the other three matches are relatively wide open on paper. Spain is given a slight edge in the odds against host Germany. That blockbuster match is the closest match in the odds with Spain -120 to advance and Germany -110. France is a slightly bigger favorite against Portugal.

England is favored against the Swiss but is only +115 to win in regular time. Switzerland played in the first knockout match and is playing on the second day of the quarterfinals, meaning the Swiss will have a full week between matches, which is unusual for major tournaments.

The quarterfinals will take place on Friday and Saturday.
