Butter Yellow and the Foodification of Color

If you’re still concerned, like me, that butter yellow is just another trend, rest assured that it is in the eye of the beholder. Here’s what Jamie Lenore McKillop, founder of Lazy Jamie, has to say about the lifecycle of this color: “I believe, as with any trend, it comes down to the execution of it in terms of whether it will have staying power or it will seem dated with time. If you’re naturally drawn to butter yellow, then you should incorporate it in the spaces and places where it organically makes sense. But if you’re only identifying with it because it’s on-trend and then [you’re] overdoing it in your home, it’s guaranteed to become obsolete once the next trend cycle emerges.”

In regards to my kitchen cabinets, I’ve decided to just take the plunge, opting for a paler shade of butter yellow. Call it an unoriginal idea if you must, but butter yellow cabinets feel true to my personal style and are the perfect touch of Wes Anderson and midcentury.

Ready to take the plunge into butter yellow?

Tekla Percale Duvet Cover

One of my favorite ways in which I’ve added butter yellow to my home has been with my bedding. Tekla of course excels in not just their luscious feeling percale sheets, but their incredible colorways—including this duvet set in the appropriately named “shaded yellow.”

Business & Pleasure Co. The Al Fresco Chair Cushion

Butter yellow really excels in stripe format and it easily matches with outdoor patio furniture. This lovely yellow-striped cushion from Anthropologie feels nostalgic with a touch of Palm Springs glam.

HAY Don’t Leave Me Side Table

Finding a side table that is both sturdy and moveable can be challenging; this HAY side table solves both problems. It comes with a built in handle allowing for easy mobility, with a tripod base for stability. And it also comes in a heavenly bright yellow.

Kartell Componibili Bio Storage Unit

I always recommend the Componibili storage units to my friends who want both function and design and are living in tighter spaces. At less than 13 inches around, you can tuck this mini storage unit and side table anywhere. They also come in an amazing range of colors, including this perfect pastel yellow.

There is something about yellow bath towels that feels perfectly ’70s and retro. These FRAMA towels are made of hemp and cotton, making them warm and absorbent. I particularly adore this shade of pale butter yellow and will be adding one of these hand towels into my rotation.

Quiet Town Catalina Shower Curtain

This adorable striped yellow shower curtain definitely would make me think you churn your own butter and know how to sail. It is 100% cotton canvas and is inspired by vintage sails.

Gustaf Westman Yellow Curvy Micro Mirror

If you really want to make a splash in your space, try a mirror with a nontraditional-colored frame. Gustaf Westman is the internet’s favorite Swedish object maker for a reason, his designs are curvy and colorful in all the right ways.

Herman Miller x HAY Eames Molded Plastic Armchair

Arriving in a subtle soft butter yellow, these Eames armchairs would work perfectly around a wooden dining table. If you’re hesitant to buy a few, try starting with one as an accent chair within your space.

Maybe you’re not 100% ready to bring yellow into your sanctuary but are excited about the prospect of having some more sunshine around the house. Try this superchic packable beach chair by ITA leisure, sure to make some heads turn. Made of PVC cord and coated aluminum, it’s not only lightweight but durable to withstand sand and sea.
