Twelve years after Tim and Trisha Johnson purchased the famous Home Alone mansion in East Winnetka for nearly US$1.6 million, the recently revamped property is back on the market, now listed at just under US$5.2 million.

Set behind a wrought-iron gate on a tree-lined street along Lake Michigan’s North Shore, the Georgian-style mansion was built in 1921 and underwent a significant renovation and expansion in 2018, according to the Robb Report.

The home gained fame as the setting for the 1990 hit film Home Alone, where it was depicted as the residence of 8-year-old Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin).

Kevin was famously left behind by his family during the holidays and had to protect the house from the bumbling burglars known as the Wet Bandits.

Listed by Coldwell Banker Realty’s Dawn McKenna Group, the property is described as a “rare opportunity to own one of the most iconic movie residences in American pop culture”.

The stately red brick structure boasts five bedrooms and six bathrooms across more than 845sq m of multi-level living space, equipped with modern amenities.

Highlights of the main level include a grand entry foyer leading to a formal dining room and a fireside living room.

A family room with a coffered ceiling opens to a screened porch with a wood-burning fireplace.

The adjacent gourmet kitchen features dual islands, Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances, a walk-in pantry, and a breakfast nook with a built-in banquette.

The main floor also includes an office, a cozy den, and a mudroom.

The upstairs primary suite offers a fireplace, a walk-in closet, and a marble-clad bath with dual vanities, a freestanding soaking tub, and a separate shower.

A former attic space now hosts a guest bedroom with an ensuite.

The finished basement includes a lounge area, a wet bar-equipped game room, a movie theatre, a gym, and an indoor sports court with a three-point line.

The property spans just over a half-acre, featuring grassy grounds, a hot tub, and a wood deck for outdoor lounging and entertaining.

An attached heated three-car garage and an additional parking bay complete the luxurious estate.
