Michigan has hired former Western Michigan defensive coordinator Lou Esposito to coach its defensive line, filling the void left by the resignation of Greg Scruggs.

Esposito was the defensive coordinator and defensive line coach at WMU from 2017-2023 before accepting a job as co-defensive coordinator at Memphis this offseason. He replaces Scruggs, who resigned March 21 following his arrest on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

“Lou is a great defensive mind that has developed outstanding players and produced top units at the line of scrimmage throughout his coaching career,” coach Sherrone Moore said in a statement. “He will be a great asset and mentor for the young men in our program.”

Esposito coached and recruited several defensive standouts at WMU, including defensive end Ali Fayad, the MAC defensive player of the year in 2021, and defensive tackle Braden Fiske, now a potential Day 1 or Day 2 draft prospect at Florida State. Esposito also coached at WMU from 2010-2012 with a stop at Ferris State and a stint as the head coach at Davenport University in between.

The hiring of Esposito completes Michigan’s defensive staff under Moore and new defensive coordinator Wink Martindale.
