Neil Warnock has stepped aside as interim manager of Aberdeen after just eight matches.

Warnock, 75, was only appointed at Pittodrie on February 5 but failed to win any of his six Scottish Premiership matches in charge.

The veteran manager did guide his side to Scottish Cup victories over Scottish League Two side Bonnyrigg Rose and against Kilmarnock on Saturday, sealing the side’s spot in the last four of the competition.

However, Warnock’s side picked up just two points from his six league games at the helm, stretching Aberdeen’s winless run in the division to 10 matches.

The run of league results has seen Aberdeen slip to 10th in the standings, four points clear of 11th-placed Ross County and 10 points ahead of Livingston at the foot of the table.

Warnock said in a statement after Saturday’s cup victory over Kilmarnock: “I was honoured to lead Aberdeen for a short period to help Dave and the Board get themselves into a position where they could get closer to making a permanent appointment.

“It goes without saying that I had hoped I could’ve collected a few more league wins along the way, but I am also delighted to have helped the club into the Scottish Cup Semi Final. I hope they can now go on and lift the trophy.”

“Ronnie and I can’t thank the fans enough for their support while we’ve been here and we wish the club and the supporters all the very best for the remainder of the season and for the future.”

Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack said of Warnock’s exit: “The Club would like to thank both Neil and Ronnie Jepson for their efforts.

“With the search for a new manager at an advanced stage, Peter Leven will assume control of all first team matters until the process is concluded.”

Aberdeen were the 17th club of Warnock’s managerial career, which began in 1980, and was his first job since leaving Huddersfield Town in September.

Warnock initially retired in June 2022 after leaving Middlesbrough but returned to the dugout with Huddersfield in February 2023, 28 years after he last coached the West Yorkshire club.

Aberdeen return to league action on Wednesday night with a trip to Dundee.
