Canelo Alvarez will defend his super middleweight championship on May 4 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas against fellow Mexican boxer Jaime Munguía, the promotions announced Friday.

Alvarez, the face of the sport, has not fought since defeating Jermell Charlo via unanimous decision in September 2023. According to multiple reports, Alvarez was nearing a bout against Jermell’s twin brother, Jermall, but the matchup did not come to fruition.

Alvarez (60-2) has won three straight bouts by unanimous decision since losing to Dmitry Bivol up multiple divisions at light heavyweight in May 2022. It was his only defeat since dropping a majority decision to Floyd Mayweather in 2013.

Munguía, of Tijuana, is 43-0 with 34 finishes. He’s coming off arguably the most impressive victory of his career, a ninth-round TKO of John Ryder in January. He is Alvarez’s first Mexican opponent since Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in 2017.

Alvarez will be promoted by Premier Boxing Champions on a one-fight deal, according to ESPN. PBC, longtime partners with Showtime, announced in December a multi-year agreement to broadcast fights on Amazon Prime Video. This bout will be available on Amazon Prime as well as DAZN.
