The New York Yankees released third baseman Josh Donaldson, the team announced Tuesday. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Donaldson was placed on the 60-day injured list with a right calf issue on July 20, meaning he is eligible to come off the IL in mid-September. Manager Aaron Boone said this past weekend that Donaldson was working toward a rehab assignment.
  • The 37-year-old slashed .142/.225/.434 with 10 home runs before the injury.
  • The former American League MVP is a pending free agent and previously told The Athletic he was undecided on whether he would try to play on or retire after this season.
