West Ham have completed the signing of Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse.

The Premier League club agreed a £30million fee for Ward-Prowse last week and he had a medical on Friday ahead of the move.

The 28-year-old did not feature on Saturday as Southampton drew 4-4 with Norwich City, having played last weekend in the south-coast side’s opening Championship fixture.

Ward-Prowse, who will wear the No 7 shirt at West Ham, had spent his entire career with Southampton, making 422 appearances and scoring 55 goals.

The midfielder has signed a contract with his new club until the summer of 2027.

The England international, who had three years left on his Southampton contract, spoke about the move to his new club’s official website, saying: “I’m buzzing to be here at West Ham United. It’s great to be here and I’m looking forward to getting going.

“From the outside looking in, this is a Club that has been on the rise for a number of years now and coming off the success in the UEFA Europa Conference League last year, you can feel there is real momentum around this Club. It’s great to be a part of it and I can’t wait to play my role in the games to come.

“When I think about my game, it is based on hard work, graft, and giving 100 per cent. West Ham United has always been a Club that has epitomises that. You can feel that from the fans and you can see it in the players who are here and the lads that have come through the Academy too.

“I feel as though I will fit straight in and I can promise I will give my all for this football club in my time here.”

Ward-Prowse, who was named Southampton captain in 2020, made 410 appearances for his former club scoring 55 goals and providing 54 assists.

Out of his 49 Premier League goals, 17 of those were direct free-kicks which places the midfielder one free-kick below David Beckham’s total of 18 Premier League free-kick goals.

He has also earned 11 caps for England since making his senior international debut in 2017, scoring two goals.

West Ham are next in action against Chelsea at the London Stadium on Sunday.

Ward-Prowse is carrying Southampton like Le Tissier did – is he now a club legend?

Ward-Prowse’s brilliant free-kick technique

Analysis by The Athletic’s Liam Tharme

Not many players get within touching distance of Lionel Messi or David Beckham in their career.

But James Ward-Prowse is just one goal away from Beckham’s Premier League direct free-kick record (18), following last month’s match-winner away to Chelsea.

He has already bettered Beckham for free-kick goals in away games (11) and the typically brilliant effort at Stamford Bridge was his sixth Premier League game-winning goal from a direct free kick.

Even more impressive is how he keeps scoring the same free kick from the same part of the pitch. Ward-Prowse himself describes his ideal territory as approximately 25 yards out, slightly off to the left, as this gives the necessary distance and angle to strike “over the wall, to the top left”.
