Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson will miss the Premier League match with Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon after being taken unwell earlier this morning .

The club confirmed that the 76-year-old was taken unwell ahead of the game in Birmingham and now won’t be at Villa Park.

In his place assistant Paddy McCarthy will take charge of the team alongside Ray Lewington.

A club statement read: “Unfortunately Roy Hodgson was taken unwell earlier today and is not at Villa Park.

“Roy is in contact with Paddy McCarthy, who will take the team today assisted by Ray Lewington.

“Roy sent his best wishes to the team ahead of the match. We send our very best wishes to Roy.”

Hodgson had retired from football at the end of the 2021-22 season before returning to Palace on a temporary basis in March of this year as replacement for Patrick Vieira.

He went on to help guide them to Premier League safety, winning five of his 10 games in charge.

He signed a one-year contract with the club earlier this summer to stay on in a permanent capacity.

Palace are seventh in the Premier League table after two wins, a draw and a defeat from their opening four games of the season.
