PWHL Draft to be held in June: What to expect in Year 2

The 2024 PWHL Draft will be held in June, the league announced Tuesday afternoon.

The PWHL’s second annual draft will be seven rounds with 42 selections for the league’s six teams compared to last year when the draft was 15 rounds with 90 players selected.

The declaration window will be open from March 1 to May 8, which will give players time to make their decision after the conclusion of their respective seasons, like the NCAA championships and the IIHF women’s world championship in April.

“The draft is the primary gateway to the PWHL and number one source of new talent,” Jayna Hefford the PWHL’s senior vice president of hockey operations said. “The majority of the league’s founding players were selected in the inaugural PWHL Draft, and we anticipate the level of play will continue to be raised across the league as teams make their picks in June.”

The 2024-25 draft will utilize a traditional format, in which once a round is completed, the following round will be conducted in the same order — compared to last year’s snake draft format. The draft lottery process — and subsequent order — has yet to be announced.

The league has previously stated that teams are not able to trade draft picks during the inaugural season. However, according to Tuesday’s news release, “there will be a window following the completion of the season that will allow teams the ability to trade draft picks.”

Selected players may go unsigned for two years before becoming eligible to enter the draft again. No player can declare for more than two drafts.

Players who go undrafted will become free agents. According to the release, teams will be able to sign free agents starting on June 21, 2024.
