Ohio State wrestler Sammy Sasso, a two-time Big Ten champion and two-time NCAA runner-up, was the “victim of a senseless shooting incident” Friday night in Columbus, Ohio, OSU wrestling coach Tom Ryan said in a statement Saturday.
Sasso was transported to The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, where he is continuing to be cared for, and has non-life-threatening injuries, per Ryan. University police are assisting Columbus Police with an investigation into the incident.
Sasso, a fifth-year senior last season, was the Big Ten champion in 2021 and 2023 at 149 pounds. He finished second at the NCAA championships those years, as well as fifth in 2022.
Sasso is also a member of the United States senior national freestyle team. He is a native of Nazareth, Pa.
