I’ve been blessed with a fairly sunny disposition. Not that there aren’t ever clouds, but my default is to look for the silver lining.
I’ve found myself struggling with that a bit of late – not on a personal level, but as I contemplate the state of our nation and the world from my laptop perch. When news is your business, you rarely tune it out – and most of it is less than encouraging these days. And I know I’m far from alone in this sense of foreboding.
It’s as though we’re nearing high tide and the waves of wretchedness are battering the shore, with no end in sight. Feels rather like we’re about to go under.
But as I was mulling this – brooding on it frankly – something nudged me to look up. And I was reminded that there is far more beyond the here and now, and that when we place our faith where it belongs – in principle, not person or party; in God, not man — the sun is bound to shine through.
I was reminded, too, of these lines from an old favorite of mine:
Though the storm and its furies rage today
Crushing hopes that we cherish so dear
The clouds and storms will in time pass away
And the sun again will shine bright and clear
Keep on the sunny side, my friends.
