India Box Office: ‘Adipurush’ Earns $17 Million Worldwide Amid Controversies

Even as the film continues to battle various controversies, Adipurush managed a remarkable score of nearly $17 million gross across the globe on the first day of its release on June 16. Directed by Om Raut, the film features Prabhas, SDunny Singh,Kriti Sanon, Saif Ali Khan and in important roles. The film collected $6 million nett in the Indian market.

Adipurush is Prabhas’ third film to have crossed $10 milion collection on the first day of the release after Bahubali, Bahubali 2 and Saaho. In a press note, production banner T-Series shared: “A cinematic extravaganza, ‘Adipurush’ has created a massive impact on box office… This magnum opus has conquered hearts with a staggering opening of $16 million at the global box office.” Made on an estimated budget of $63 million, the film is co-produced by director Raut, Prasad Sutar, and Rajesh Nair of Retrophiles, Pramod, and Vamsi of UV Creations, and Bhushan Kumar of Tseries.

Ahead of the film’s release, it was high on buzz and hype around it. Riding on religious sentiments of the majority in India, Adipurush scored huge numbers in advance bookings – both domestic and outside India. Adipurush collected more thsan $16000 in advance booking in Australian & New Zealand markets almost a week ahead of the release. The film earned $600,000 in India in the advance bookings. The film released in Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Tamil languages.

Adipurush and Controversies

Adipurush has been mired in controversies ever since the first trailer of the film came out. The audience did not like the trailer which was widely panned for bad graphics and mis-representation of the mythological figures from Ramayan. Soon, the producers announced that they’d go back and rework on their film.

When it finally released, several factions have raised objections. Nepal first stalled screenings of the film as the film called Sita India’s daughter, while the mythological epic zeroes in on her origin as Nepal. The country also has one of the msot important temples dedicated to Goddess Sita.

Three opposition parties in India – Congress, Aam Aadmi Party and Shiv Sena (UBT) have also criticised Adipurush for its wrongful portrayal of Lord Hanuman. On Sunday, the film’s writer Manoj Muntashir Shukla shared that Adipurush team has decided to heed to the feedback (audience did not like demeaning and disrespectful dialogues mouthed by divine figures of Raghav, Janaki and Hanuman.

T Series (producers of Adipurush) said in a statement, “Adipurush is garnering an overwhelming response across the world and is conquering hearts of audiences across all ages. Making this visual spectacle a memorable cinematic experience, the team decides to make alterations to the film’s dialogues – Valuing the input of the public and the audience. This decision is a testament that in spite of unstoppable collections at the Box Office, the team is committed and nothing is beyond the sentiments of their audiences and harmony at large.”
