Heavy Rains Cause Severe Flooding In New York State, At Least One Killed

At least one person was killed as heavy rains triggered flash flooding in parts of New York state on Sunday evening, the New York Times reported, as flash flood warnings remain in effect until early Monday morning across southeastern parts of the state, including New York City.

Key Facts

A woman in her 30s was swept away by flood waters in Orange County, according to NBC News, while Hochul said that several others were missing and at least one home has been washed away by the floods.

Hochul also noted that more than 13,000 people were without power on Sunday night.

New York City, has issued a flood watch that will remain in effect until 6 a.m. ET. while flood warnings remain in effect in several other parts of the state including the counties of Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Westchester and Dutchess.

What To Watch For

The National Weather Service has warned of “continued increases” the total amount of rain the northeast region of the country will experience on Monday. Vermont and parts of New York are expected to face “considerable flooding impacts” on Monday which the agency says will be similar to the remnants of Hurricane Irene from 2011. The NWS also tweeted that a “considerable flood threat with a high risk of excessive rainfall” is also expected across the New England region on Monday.
