Gary Woodland, the winner of the 2019 U.S. Open, will undergo brain surgery on Sept. 18, he announced via social media.
“I wanted to share a recent health development with you,” he wrote. “On Sept 18, I’ll be having surgery to remove a lesion found on my brain.”
Woodland, 39, shared that the lesion was diagnosed a few months ago and that he has been working to treat the symptoms with medications.
“After consulting with multiple specialists and discussing with my family, we’ve made the decision that surgery to remove the lesion is the best course of action,” he said.

Woodland’s 2019 U.S. Open victory was his first major championship. He recorded top-10 finishes at the PGA Championship in 2018 and 2019, finished tied for 10th at the U.S. Open in 2022 and finished tied for 14th at the Masters this year.
Woodland claimed the 2019 major by outdueling two-time defending champ Brooks Koepka, and shot the lowest U.S. Open score in eight years.
In the past year, Woodland has carded top-10 finishes at the Genesis Invitational and the Houston Open.
