Model tested: Buchanan Studio Chair in Indigo
The details: Buchanan Studio is a London-based firm founded by creative couple Charlotte and Angus Buchanan. In addition to interior design, the brand works across creative direction, branding, and product design. Summer 2021 marked the studio’s first product release with the debut of their studio chair. Per their website, the brand currently sells furniture as well as homeware and fabric.
Price: How much does it cost? Are there payment plans available?
It costs £2,795, or approximately $3,514 USD.
What are the upholstery or customization options? Did you choose any? (Are there free swatch options available?)
The studio chair is currently marketed in three colorways, all the same vertical accent color and white stripe pattern: indigo, rose, and ruby.
What is the lead time for customization, manufacturing, and delivery?
The current lead time is an estimated 8 to 10 weeks.
What are the dimensions? How does it fit in your space? Would it be better suited for a different type of home?
The dimensions are 71 cm H x 104 cm W x 100 cm D, with a 41 cm seat height. It struck me as somewhat wider than I expected, I think because of its puffy armrests. In my apartment, the chair sticks out as a bright, rather elegant piece amongst shoddier and more muted furniture, which seems no real fault of its own and is likely precisely what some are looking for in an accent chair. I see it more at home as a set of two situated in the stylish loggia of some beachy coastal dwelling.
Sit Test: Is it comfortable? Does it feel well made? Does the chair have a tendency to sag?
It’s super comfortable, but its plush, pillowy appearance belies a far more rigid structure. It’s far firmer than I expected upon first glance. This initially came as a disappointment, but that disappointment was tempered by the fact that it almost seems to encourage an ergonomic correctness. I can see some thinking it is a bit too firm, as my husband did. But many accent chairs aren’t conducive to being sat in for a long time while typing on a laptop, and it works well for this purpose (at least for me) because it really keeps its form. The seat cushion will slide forward every once in a while with lots of getting up and sitting down but is easily pushed back into place. Other than that, it feels very sturdily made.
