BP chief executive Bernard Looney is to resign less than four years into the job, according to two people with knowledge of the decision.

Looney, 53, joined BP in 1991 aged 21 and has spent his entire career at the company. The Irish citizen was appointed chief executive in 2020 to transform the oil producer into an integrated energy company and navigate the energy transition.

A BP spokesperson could not immediately comment. Looney did not respond to requests for comments.

Looney has pledged to cut oil and gas production to reduce emissions, while investing in clean energy technologies such as wind power, hydrogen and electric vehicle charging.

This is a developing story.
