Backlash to Woke ‘Snow White’ Remake Intensifies After Another Cringe Interview Clip Goes Viral

As my RedState colleague Brandon Morse pointed out in July, the live-action remake of “Snow White,” which is set to debut in January 2024, appears to be destined to fail before moviegoers get a chance to see the finished product, primarily because the movie’s stars have been obnoxiously giddy about pointing out how it will be woke and nothing like the 1937 original.

Rachel Zegler, who plays Snow White, and Gal Gadot, who plays the Evil Queen, were over the moon in a widely shared clip from the D23 Expo that surfaced last month which showed Zegler and Gadot talking about how Prince Charming’s role would be significantly reduced.

“She’s not going to be saved by the prince and she’s not going to be dreaming about true love,” Zegler noted when asked about how she would “bring a modern edge” to the story.

“She’s dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be, and the leader that her late father told her that she could be if she was fearless, fair, brave, and true,” Zegler went on to say.

The result of that has been a pretty significant backlash, with many people noting they’re just not interested in seeing that so-called “modern twist” to the classic because, well some things are just better off left alone and unchanged, and quite frankly there was nothing wrong with the original.

Over the weekend, more clips of Zegler from that same Expo talking about how the movie would be different from the original resurfaced, and along with that snippets of how she’s disparaged the concept of Snow White before in other interviews. Essentially, what all the clips boil down to is Zegler not thinking much of Prince Charming the “stalker” and the whole Snow White story in general.

“I mean, you know, the original cartoon came out in 1937 and very evidently so. There’s a big focus on her love story with a guy who literally stalks her,” Zegler claimed in one of the clips. “Weird! Weird. So we didn’t do that this time.”

In another, she talked about how “scared” she was of the cartoon. “I think I watched it once,” she said in the video, before pointing out she once rode on the Disney ride “Snow White’s Scary Adventures” and expressed incredulity that a ride with that name would have been marketed towards children.

“Never revisited Snow White again,” afterward, she declared. In fact, Zegler said she didn’t watch or read anything Snow White related for “16 years” (she’s 22) until she picked up the script for the movie. Because apparently for those 16 years, we were supposed to believe she was really committed to making a statement about the supposedly backward nature of Snow White or something.

At the end of the video snippets below, we see Gadot and Zegler together again, with both of them talking about how the focus of the film would be watching Snow White “coming into her own” and realizing her own strength and power, apparently without the help of a man other than her father, whose role it was merely to nurture her.

“It’s what makes it so relevant to where we are today,” Gadot proclaimed.

Watch:

This is so 50 shades of ridiculous that I was momentarily at a loss for words when I watched the montage of clips – and I wasn’t the only one. I mean from the looks of it they are in the process of producing a “live-action” movie that sounds like a complete and unappealing rewrite of the original, with enough man-hating and “grrrrl powah!” to make you want to run for the exits the first chance you get.

They call it “reimagining.” I call it artistic theft, even though this is a Disney production. Because if you loathe something made 85 years ago and yet set out to “modernize” it by using the same title and names of the main characters – but then turn the production into something the original wasn’t, you’ve turned it into something “modern and new” while trying to profit off the popularity of the original name, which is sort of hypocritical and self-serving in my humble opinion.

Not to mention the fact that movies like this tend to not do well, as evidenced in part by the pushback “Snow White” has already received, because moviegoers, in general, are there to be relaxed and entertained, not lectured to about political and cultural matters.

After all, if they want that they could always go to an NFL or an NBA game, am I right?
