Tyrone Mings will have a scan on the injury he sustained during Aston Villa’s 5-1 defeat by Newcastle United.
Mings, 30, was taken off after half an hour against Newcastle after a collision with Alexander Isak.
There was a long stoppage in play while Mings received treatment on the pitch, before the defender was taken off on a stretcher with his head in his hands. Mings was replaced by summer signing Pau Torres, who came on for his Villa debut.
“We don’t know exactly about his injury, but it doesn’t look good,” Villa head coach Unai Emery said after the match. “Tomorrow (Sunday), we will scan him. (After) The first analysis, the doctor is telling us we have to wait for the scan, but it doesn’t look good.
“It doesn’t look good after the first scan which the doctor did. We are going to wait until tomorrow for the scan. We are going to do that in the hospital tomorrow.”
Villa were 2-1 down when Mings went off, with Sandro Tonali giving Newcastle an early lead before Moussa Diaby equalised. Isak put the hosts in front again in the 16th minute, with the Swedish striker capitalising on an error in the second half from Ezri Konsa to score again. Substitute Callum Wilson added a fourth for Newcastle in the 77th minute.
Mings previously missed 15 months of action after injuring his cruciate and medial ligaments in his knee on his Bournemouth debut in August 2015.
The England international enjoyed a successful season for Villa last term once Emery was appointed, having been stripped of the club captaincy and dropped under Steven Gerrard. Having come back into the Villa team after Gerrard’s sacking, Mings was rewarded with a recall to the England team in May and came on as a substitute during the 4-0 win over Malta in June.
Villa were also dealt a blow during the build-up to the Newcastle game, with attacking midfielder Emi Buendia suffering an ACL injury.
Emery’s side return to action next weekend when they host Everton.
