Today’s match will be the 101st Community Shield. The competition began in 1908 but took hiatuses during both world wars.
In its early days, the competition’s participants varied greatly, including several matches pitting amateurs against professionals. Today’s format of the previous season’s league champions against the FA winners was originally introduced in 1921 and became commonplace starting in 1930, albeit with several exceptions down the years.
The match was referred to as the Charity Shield until 2002, when the Charity Commission forced the FA to change the name.

These two teams are meeting in the Community Shield for the first time since 2014, when Arsenal beat Manchester City 3-0 (pictured above).
Arsenal have won each of their last four appearances in this match, while City have been on the losing side each of the past two years.

Fan opposition moved kick-off time earlier
The kick-off time for today’s Community Shield was moved forward in June after Manchester City fans threatened to boycott the match.
The game was originally scheduled to begin at 5:30pm BST but after supporters voiced opposition over the difficulties of travelling to and from the capital at such time, it was shifted forward 90 minutes to 4pm.
The FA issued a statement in June saying: “The decision to move the kick off time has been taken following full consideration of the transport challenges for fans returning to Manchester after the match.”
However, not all supporters were satisfied by the change. Supporter group MCFC Fans Foodbank Support responded by saying that although they welcomed the decision, bringing forward the kick-off time did “not meet the concerns of thousands of City fans who will still only get home extremely late on a Sunday night and still face many unnecessary travel challenges along the way.”
