Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has been recalled to the Cameroon national team.
The 27-year-old had announced his retirement from international football last December after a disagreement with head coach Rigobert Song over tactics. Onana was then left out of his nation’s second game of the World Cup against Serbia and eventually flew home from the tournament in Qatar without playing any further part in Cameroon’s campaign.
His only appearance in the tournament came against Switzerland in Cameroon’s opening game, which they lost 1-0.
Onana, who joined Manchester United this summer in a deal worth €51million (£43.9m, $57.4m) plus €4m in add-ons, announced his international retirement later in December, stating that his “story with the Cameroon national team had come to an end”.
Yet, Onana has been named in his nation’s squad ahead of their upcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification fixture against Burundi on September 12. AFCON is set to take place in Ivory Coast in January, as the 2023 edition was postponed for a year.
It is unclear whether Onana has made himself available for selection and will report to the national team.
Onana made his senior international debut in 2016. He has gained 34 caps and won the Cameroonian footballer of the year award in 2018.
