New Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim says that midfielder Mason Mount is “perfect” for his system.

Amorim, 39, is renowned for the 3-4-3 system he deployed while manager of Sporting CP, where he won five trophies at the Portuguese club, including two league titles.

Mount, 25, thrived in a similar system while playing for Chelsea, particularly under Thomas Tuchel where he helped the London club win the Champions League in 2021.

Due to a succession of injury issues and poor form, Mount has been limited to making just 26 appearances in all competitions for United since completing his move from Chelsea in the summer of 2023, but he could see a change in his fortunes under Amorim.

Ruben Amorim’s first Man Utd press conference: What he said and what it means

In an interview with his new club’s website, Amorim said: “Mason Mount. I have to tell you I love that kid. You can look in his eyes that he wants this so bad, and this is the most important thing for me.

“I know he was suffering from injuries, he was not on the pitch, but now he’s trying to stay fit and we hope he can continue to be fit, to show all the talent that he’s shown, for example, in Chelsea.”

“He played in this system (before), so it’s perfect for him. I have two positions for Mason Mount, so he should be very happy!”

Mount has suffered an injury-hit start to the 2024-25 campaign, having made just six appearances this season.

The midfielder returned to full training earlier this month having not played since being forced off midway through United’s 3-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in September after suffering a blow to the head.

Amorim’s first game as Manchester United manager will be against Ipswich Town at Portman Road on Sunday (4.30pm GMT/11.30am ET).
